Detailed description — Eurasian wren cookie cutter
Who is this little wren?
Despite its unusual name, the Eurasian wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) is indeed a bird! And a tiny one: around 9 to 10.5 cm long and just 8 to 9 grams, it is among Europe’s smallest passerines. Its rounded body, brown plumage and short tail usually held upright make it recognisable. Fun fact: despite its miniature size, its song is surprisingly powerful. Tiny bird, big voice!
A little visitor to our gardens
The wren likes places where it can slip through and hide: bushes, woodland undergrowth, brambles, woodpiles, parks and gardens. It spends much of its time close to the ground looking for small insects and invertebrates. Its scientific name refers to its nesting habits: its ball-shaped nest is often in a cavity, against a wall, in a tree or among roots, like a little cave dwelling.
A wren… as a biscuit!
We used this bird’s endearing features to create a cookie cutter in its likeness. Its round silhouette, fine beak, wing and famous upright tail appear directly in the dough. Roll out your dough, press the cutter and your wren is ready to fly… after a trip to the oven.
For bird and nature lovers
A change from cats, dogs and dinosaurs! Bird enthusiasts, amateur ornithologists, nature lovers and gardeners will particularly enjoy it, as will anyone fond of our little garden visitors. It also makes a lovely nature activity with children: bake biscuits, then discover the real bird that inspired them.
